Fry’s English Delight!
Former Birmingham City, Peterborough, Southend and Barnet Manager Barry Fry has spoken of his delight at being named Manager of The England Legends for their game against Ireland at Fulham’s Craven Cottage on Thursday evening.
Fry, who steps into the shoes of former Legends boss Peter Reid, takes charge of a 16-man England Legends squad that faces their Ireland counterparts live on ITV4 for The Johnny Haynes Cup. He commented: “It is the dream of every Englishman to take the reigns of his national team and while Mr. Capello might have the top job, this one’s not far behind. I never thought I’d have the chance to field a team that includes names like Robson, Walker, Merson, Woods, Le Saux, Winterburn, Sharpe and Parlour. This is proper fantasy football! I know that England expects, but I think I am the man to deliver the dreams of a nation and really get country buzzing before the boys take on Kazakhstan at the weekend.”
Fry takes charge of an England Legends squad that earned 395 international caps and scored 39 goals. The England Legends have lifted 15 titles, 18 FA Cups, 11 League Cups, two European Cups and five European Cup Winners Cups. Fry faces Ireland Player/Manager Niall Quinn whose 15-man squad has earned 549 international caps and scored 66 goals, lifted three FA Cups and two European Cup Winners Cups.
Physically, the Irish Legends have the edge, their average age is 42 compared and England’s almost 43. Dermot Gallagher, who, over a 15-year Premier League career, officiated at 378 games, will referee the match.

Sunderland Chairman Niall Quinn will pull on the green of the Republic of Ireland once again after signing up to become Player/Manager of the Ireland Legends that will face England at Fulham’s Craven Cottage kicking off at 7.45pm on Thursday October 9th, live on ITV4.
Quinn will face an England Legends line-up that includes former skipper Bryan Robson, Paul Merson, Lee Sharpe, Stan Collymore and David Platt. The Sunderland Chairman will take charge, and line-up alongside, the likes of Frank Stapleton, Ray Houghton, Jason McAteer, Denis Irwin and Kenny Cunningham. The two 16-man squads will clash at Fulham for The Johnny Haynes Cup.
The teams unite players who break the 1,000 cap barrier. The 32 former internationals have appeared for their countries a total of 1,067 times and scored 143 international goals. The teams bring with them experience of 18 top flight titles, 24 FA Cup wins, 16 League Cups, two European Cups and eight UEFA Cup Winners Cups.
The teams couldn’t be more evenly matched. The England Legends’ average age is 42.4 compared to Ireland’s 42.3. However, the Ireland squad have far greater experience, earning an average of almost 41 caps a man compared to England’s 26.

Bryan Robson named Captain for The Legends: England v Ireland at Craven Cottage
Former Manchester United and England midfielder Bryan Robson has been named England skipper for The Legends: England v Ireland which takes place at Fulham’s Craven Cottage on Thursday October 9th live on ITV4, kicking off at 7.45pm.
Robson, who made 90 appearances for his country, 65 as captain, pulls on an England Legends jersey for the second time. Robson was at the helm when England faced The Germany Legends at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane Stadium on Thursday May 15th.
On his appointment, Robson commented: “It’s great to pull on an England Legends shirt again and line up alongside so many talented players. Against Germany, it was great to feel the competitive edge that comes along with representing your country. As far as the Ireland game is concerned, I know there’s talk of Niall Quinn playing for Ireland. If that’s the case, I might have to get on Des Walker’s shoulders to deal with him!”

The 37-year old former United midfielder, who has already scored twice for The England Legends, earned a Cup Winners' Cup medal at Old Trafford before moving on to Leeds for £4.5m in 1996. He has played for the England national team on eight occasions.

Fulham Football Club’s Craven Cottage is to stage a mouth-watering clash of ITV4’s England and The Republic of Ireland international footballing legends on Thursday October 9th at 7.45pm.
The game, the third in ITV4’s three-game 2008 Legends series sees former internationals from England and The Republic of Ireland line up for The Johnny Haynes Memorial Cup.
The England Legends squad will be managed by former Everton, Manchester City and England midfielder Peter Reid. He said: “It is fantastic news that the third England Legends game will be staged at Fulham, a Premiership club with a fantastic football history and heritage, the perfect home for Legends football. Also, Johnny Haynes is a fitting man to receive this type of international recognition.”
Sarah Brookes, Fulham’s Head of Communications & Marketing added: “We are delighted to open our gates and welcome the legends of England and Ireland to play this prestigious match at Craven Cottage. We are sure that it will attract people of all ages from all over London for what will be a great occasion. An equally pleasing part of hosting this game is the contribution it will make to the Johnny Haynes statue. It is entirely appropriate that Fulham’s greatest son should have a lasting tribute at the Cottage and the contribution from the Legend’s game, and the generosity of our Chairman, will help us achieve this aim.”
Described as ‘The Maestro’ by Pele, Johnny Haynes played club-record 658 games and scored 158 goals for Fulham Football Club between 1952 and 1970. Haynes is widely regarded as the greatest footballer ever to play for the London club, particularly noted for his exceptional passing skill and ability to read a game. An accomplished international, he made 56 appearances for his country, including 22 as captain.
The England Legends will be looking to bounce back to winning ways at Craven Cottage. The Germany Legends beat their English counterparts 5-1 at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane on Thursday August 7th. Lee Sharpe scored England’s only goal. In the first game of The 2008 Legends Series, on Thursday May 15th, the England Legends kicked off their summer schedule with a 2-0 win over Scotland at St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, thanks to goals from Stan Collymore and Steve Hodge.

The Legends: England v Ireland marks the sixth game for The England Legends. England have drawn 3-3 and lost 4-1 to The Italy Legends, beaten The Rest of the World Legends 4-2, Scotland 2-0 and lost to Germany 5-1. In total, more than 120,000 supporters have attended the Legends’ five previous fixtures.
The England and Ireland line-ups will be announced over the course of September and October at www.legendsfootball.tv and www.itv.com/thelegends Tickets for The Legends: England v Rep. of Ireland are £14 for adults (over 16) and £8 for OAPs/Students, plus booking fee and available from Fulham Football Club’s Box Office on 0870 442 1234. Transmission for The Legends: England v Ireland will begin at 7pm. All Legends football game operate a ‘Kid-A-Quid’ scheme; all children under 16 will gain entry to The Legends for just £1.
