Bryan Robson named Captain for The Legends: England v Ireland at Craven Cottage

Former Manchester United and England midfielder Bryan Robson has been named England skipper for The Legends: England v Ireland which takes place at Fulham’s Craven Cottage on Thursday October 9th live on ITV4, kicking off at 7.45pm.

Robson, who made 90 appearances for his country, 65 as captain, pulls on an England Legends jersey for the second time. Robson was at the helm when England faced The Germany Legends at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane Stadium on Thursday May 15th.

On his appointment, Robson commented: “It’s great to pull on an England Legends shirt again and line up alongside so many talented players. Against Germany, it was great to feel the competitive edge that comes along with representing your country. As far as the Ireland game is concerned, I know there’s talk of Niall Quinn playing for Ireland. If that’s the case, I might have to get on Des Walker’s shoulders to deal with him!”

Robson joins former Manchester United team-mate Lee Sharpe alongside Arsenal’s Paul Merson, Nigel Winterburn and Ray Parlour.

The current confirmed Republic of Ireland squad contains Manchester United full back Dennis Irwin, Arsenal and Crystal Palace midfielder Eddie McGoldrick, Charlton midfielder Mark Kinsella, Middlesbrough defender Alan Kernaghan and West Ham, Newcastle and Sunderland striker David Kelly.

The Legends: England v Republic of Ireland is the third game in The 2008 Legends Series. The England Legends beat their Scottish counterparts 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium Southampton on Thursday May 15th before losing 5-1 to Germany at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane.

Kernaghan and Kelly sign up for
ITV’s live Legends game

Former Newcastle United, Sunderland and West Ham striker David Kelly and Middlesbrough and Manchester City defender Alan Kernaghan have become the latest names to join the Republic of Ireland Legends squad that will face The England Legends at Fulham’s Craven Cottage on Thursday October 9th live on ITV4, kicking off at 7.45pm.

The addition of Kernaghan and Kelly gives the Republic of Ireland edge in terms of caps and average age. The average age of Ireland’s squad is 40.8 compared to England’s 41.4. The average number of caps per player is 34.2 against 26.2.

Kernaghan and Kelly join confirmed Republic of Ireland players Denis Irwin, Eddie McGoldrick and Mark Kinsella. Players already confirmed in The England Legends squad are Manchester United duo Bryan Robson and Lee Sharpe alongside Arsenal trio Paul Merson, Nigel Winterburn and Ray Parlour

About David Kelly During his 19-year career, 42-year old striker David Kelly made 606 appearances for 11 different clubs scoring 194 times. Kelly made 26 appearances for his country and scored on nine occasions, including a hat-trick on his debut against Israel. His most famous goal for Ireland came in the 1995 friendly game against England that was subsequently abandoned. Kelly was a member of Ireland’s EURO ‘88 and World Cup ’90 and ’94 squads.

Kernaghan was signed by Manchester City for £1.6 million after 200+ appearances for Middlesbrough, he was also the face of Teessiders when promoting the Premiership season in 1992-93. ARSENAL TRIO LINE UP FOR LONDON LEGENDS DATE

Former Arsenal team-mates Paul Merson, Ray Parlour and Nigel Winterburn have been added to Peter Reid’s England Legends squad that will face The Republic of Ireland Legends at Fulham’s Craven Cottage on Thursday October 9th live on ITV4, kick off 7.45pm.

The Legends: England v Republic of Ireland is the third game in The 2008 Legends Series. The England Legends beat their Scottish counterparts 2-0 at St. Mary’s Stadium Southampton on Thursday May 15th before losing 5-1 to Germany at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane.

Merson, Winterburn and Parlour will join Manchester United’s Lee Sharpe in facing a Republic of Ireland squad that includes former Gunner Eddie McGoldrick and Charlton’s Mark Kinsella alongside Manchester United’s Dennis Irwin.

The Legends: England v Republic of Ireland marks a fourth Legends appearance for Paul Merson. The former Arsenal, Aston Villa, Middlesbrough and Portsmouth midfielder has scored once in his quartet of appearances, against The Germany Legends in May 2006.

Nigel Winterburn returns to bolster an England Legends backline that suffered a 5-1 defeat at the hands of The Germany Legends at Sheffield United on Thursday August 7th 2008. Winterburn was key member of the team that beat The Scotland Legends 2-0 on Thursday May 15th at St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton.

Ray Parlour is a newer member of the England Legends, joining the squad in the 5-1 defeat to Italy in November 2007. Parlour was also a member of the England Legends that beat Scotland 2-0.

Mark Kinsella is the second member of The Ireland Legends to be announced. The 36-year old central midfielder made 48 appearances for the Republic, scored three times, and is a former Irish Footballer of the Year. Kinsella made over 200 appearances for Charlton Athletic.

43-year old Eddie McGoldrick played for the Republic of Ireland on 15 occasions. A 1994 European Cup Winners Cup winner with Arsenal, McGoldrick made over 350 top flight appearances for the likes of Crystal Palace, Arsenal and Manchester City.

Sharpe and Irwin Sign Up

MANCHESTER UNITED LEGENDS TO FACE OFF IN ENGLAND/IRELAND CLASH

Former Manchester United team-mates Lee Sharpe and Dennis Irwin have become the first names on their nation’s respective teamsheets for The Legends: England v Republic of Ireland which takes place at Fulham Football Club’s Craven Cottage on Thursday October 9th, KO 7.45pm.

Sharpe will be making his fourth appearance in an England Legends jersey. The 37-year old former United midfielder, who has already scored twice for The England Legends, earned a Cup Winners' Cup medal at Old Trafford before moving on to Leeds for £4.5m in 1996. He has played for the England national team on eight occasions.

England Legends Manager Peter Reid confirmed: “Sharpey is an important member of the England Legends and gives us real mobility on that left hand side. He came out of the Germany game with real credit, grabbing the only England goal; I know he’s desperate to get England back to winning ways against the Republic of Ireland.”

42-year old Dennis Irwin made 56 appearances for his country, including two USA ’94 starts, as well as 368 appearances for Manchester United where he won the Champions League trophy, Cup Winners Cups, seven Premiership titles, three FA Cups and one League Cup. Irwin also played for Leeds United, Oldham and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

ENGLAND AND IRELAND LEGENDS TO CLASH AT CRAVEN COTTAGE

Fulham Football Club’s Craven Cottage is to stage a mouth-watering clash of ITV4’s England and The Republic of Ireland international footballing legends on Thursday October 9th at 7.45pm.

The game, the third in ITV4’s three-game 2008 Legends series sees former internationals from England and The Republic of Ireland line up for The Johnny Haynes Memorial Cup.

The England Legends squad will be managed by former Everton, Manchester City and England midfielder Peter Reid. He said: “It is fantastic news that the third England Legends game will be staged at Fulham, a Premiership club with a fantastic football history and heritage, the perfect home for Legends football. Also, Johnny Haynes is a fitting man to receive this type of international recognition.”

Sarah Brookes, Fulham’s Head of Communications & Marketing added: “We are delighted to open our gates and welcome the legends of England and Ireland to play this prestigious match at Craven Cottage. We are sure that it will attract people of all ages from all over London for what will be a great occasion. An equally pleasing part of hosting this game is the contribution it will make to the Johnny Haynes statue. It is entirely appropriate that Fulham’s greatest son should have a lasting tribute at the Cottage and the contribution from the Legend’s game, and the generosity of our Chairman, will help us achieve this aim.”

Described as ‘The Maestro’ by Pele, Johnny Haynes played club-record 658 games and scored 158 goals for Fulham Football Club between 1952 and 1970. Haynes is widely regarded as the greatest footballer ever to play for the London club, particularly noted for his exceptional passing skill and ability to read a game. An accomplished international, he made 56 appearances for his country, including 22 as captain.

The England Legends will be looking to bounce back to winning ways at Craven Cottage. The Germany Legends beat their English counterparts 5-1 at Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane on Thursday August 7th. Lee Sharpe scored England’s only goal. In the first game of The 2008 Legends Series, on Thursday May 15th, the England Legends kicked off their summer schedule with a 2-0 win over Scotland at St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, thanks to goals from Stan Collymore and Steve Hodge.

Lester Holcombe, organiser of The Legends: England v Ireland, noted: “The Legends: England v Ireland will give football supporters from all over London and the south the chance to experience the unique carnival atmosphere of Legends football. It is also brilliant news that Fulham are going to celebrate the life of Johnny Haynes at the game, he was a true football Legend and a loyal servant of a club he clearly loved.”

The Legends: England v Ireland marks the sixth game for The England Legends. England have drawn 3-3 and lost 4-1 to The Italy Legends, beaten The Rest of the World Legends 4-2, Scotland 2-0 and lost to Germany 5-1. In total, more than 120,000 supporters have attended the Legends’ five previous fixtures.
